Keli Classical Theatre Festival 2015

(Kathakali)

16, 17, 18 January 2015

Dear Art Lovers,

Keli is now entering the 23rd year of its tireless journey in pursuit of excellence in the rich and diverse forms of India’s artistic traditions. The forthcoming 3 day long Keli festival scheduled on 16,17,18 January 2015 will focus on Kathakali. Kathakali, one of India’s major dance drama traditions, is a synthesis of many arts traditions carefully developed within the frame work of the Sanskrit Theatre. Kerala is known for its innumerable dance and drama traditions based on the classical, ritual and folk forms. Kathakali can be described as a unique example of a fully integrated form, liberally absorbing, over many hundreds of years, various elements from other traditions and forms. It takes back to 16th century. Kathakali is a highly stylized form with forceful abstractions of body movements, gestures and mime. The make –up costumes are colourful and elaborate. The martial traditions of Kerala form an integral part of training program and this together with other finer aspects of teaching produces a discipline and technical command that is astounding.

KELI is a Mumbai based registered Charitable organization striving to preserve, develop and propagate the classical cultural heritage of India, many of which are now on the verge of extinction. Keli has been active in this field from the last 23 years and during this period, has successfully handled a number of important projects in furtherance of its objectives. The annual Keli festivals, structured thematically every year, are well known to artists and art lovers of the City and have earned the organization a significant place in the cultural life of Mumbai. Keli is the proud presenter of more than 24 festivals focussed on the various arts traditions of India.

Keli’s attempt is to propagate the strength of this unique art tradition Kathakali and its historic relevance to a wider audience in the country. We have great pleasure in inviting all art lovers to participate in this unique Classical Theatre Festival.
